Can You Guess Which Of These Elves Leads The League In Goals?

With just one week remaining in the regular season, the race for the 2010 BTSH scoring title is nearing a conclusion.  Here are the top contenders for this coveted honor, which guarantees one pull from the media’s Mystery Box at the end of season awards ceremony:

Gavin “Dutch’s Brother” Kearney, Corlears Hookers (14 goals): It’s no secret that Gavin’s offensive output is directly correlated to Jason Eitel’s busy summer schedule.  With Jason missing several games this season, Gavin has had the opportunity to play alongside teammates who actually pass the ball once in a while, a distinct difference from the days of Eitel.  However, Gavin still has his work cut out for him, as he faces the Denim Demons and the league’s toughest defense this weekend.  Odds of winning: 25-1.

Mike Pereira, Denim Demons (14 goals): Mike’s production has slid under the radar this season with teammate Zack Tinkelman getting the bulk of the media’s attention.  Although he has always boasted a strong goals per game average, this is the first season in recent memory that Mike’s attendance has been consistent enough to make a real impact.  Regardless, he will have to put up a hat trick against the staunch Corlears Hookers defense if he wants to win the scoring race.  Odds of winning: 20-1.

“The Alpha Male” Ken Poulin, LBS, Inc. (15 goals): One of the few certainties of BTSH is that year in and year out, Ken, along with his linemate Karsten Pichon, will always be among the top scoring tandems. This season is no different.  Once again, Ken has been extremely consistent throughout the season and has also produced the occasional outburst (4 goals vs. Tompkins Square Riots). He will face goaltender Craig “Ug” LaCombe and the Unicorns this Sunday.  Odds of winning: 12-1.

When Did Ben Get So Tall?

With BTSH games switched to Saturday this past weekend, league members were given a rare chance to relax and hang out after their games without having to worry about their jobs the next day. As a result, the situation created a perfect opportunity for BTSH  to go on a Saturday night pub crawl of the Tompkins Square area. Throughout the evening, the festivities circulated to four official stops with plenty of good times and good drinks along the way.

Who On Your Team Went To Tompkins?

Although BTSH is now in its second year of playing at Tompkins Square Park, the league returned to Corlears Hook Park this past Sunday for one final afternoon of hockey and good cheer at its old stomping grounds. The festivities, however, did not end on the sloped and cracked playing surfaces near Jackson and Cherry Streets. After the games, all league members were invited to relive old memories with another Johnson’s Olympics.

At Corlears
For some of the more veteran players of BTSH, playing one final game at Corlears was a terrific treat to recapture the nostalgia of the “Golden Age” of the league.  Others, however, were shocked and appalled at the conditions of the league’s former home.  Regardless of one’s opinion, everyone was happy about the addition of a vertiable smorgasbord of food and drink at courtside.  Highlights of this appetizing spread included the Anklebiters’ famous Booze Berries, Jeremy “The Foot” Schumacher’s deep fried mac and cheese, and Peaches’ mixed drinks with unknown ingredients.  This, of course, was just the beginning, as “ring girls” reminded league members of the Johnson’s Olympics that evening.  As a brief piece of trivia, the final game ever at Corlears Hook Park was the Mathematics’ 4-3 win over the Tompkins Square Riots.

The Demons Have More Fans Than You

As per tradition, the Denim Demons once again hosted their annual “Demons Family Day” this past Sunday.  All players on the team were highly encouraged to invite their families for some good, clean Demons hockey.  Thus, the West Court dugouts were packed with red, as the honored guests  witnessed the Demons defeat the defending champion Sky Fighters 1-0  in a spirited Hockey Night in Tompkins national telecast.  This marked the second consecutive shutout for the Demons on Family Day, who also beat Cobra Kai 2-0 in 2009.

With record attendance and several family members making lengthy treks to reach the game, the event was viewed as a huge success.  Notable attendees included frequent btsh.org commenter Joe “Twinkle Toes” Tinkelman, Adam “Legend Killer” Rubens’ mother, the Carsons, and Abby “Tayne” Meisterman’s moms.  Rubens’ mother even donned a throwback Adam Rubens jersey to support her wonderful son.  She noted, “…the way my son took down the Sky Fighters, he truly is a legend killer!”
