KEEP THOSE STICKS DOWN!!!

remember, a “high stick” in BTSH is a stick above the waist. someone was injured in the saturday tourney last week by a stick follow through. if that person wasn’t wearing glasses, there’s a good chance that greater injury would have occured. if you don’t wear them already, PLEASE buy some sports goggles! and KEEP THOSE STICKS DOWN!!!

POSTINGS

* ICE HOCKEY IN HARLEM BENFIT
from dave paglia of mighty squirrels

Few of you probably know this but I was introduced to the team thru Pat Larsen, as we were both volunteercoaches for a program called Ice Hockey In Harlem (IHIH moving forward). My point is this, I know each of you crazy nuts likes to drink and play hockey so this IHIH event brings both together for a great cause. The details are this: Friday, may 4th, Time is 7pm, cost is $30 per person, location is Time Out (77th and amerstdam). What you get for your time and money: 3 hours of open bar and every TV showcasing the Rangers V Sabres (game 5) plus a decent portion of this money is going to help send one IHIH kid to a hockey camp (the other part is to help the bar cut its loss’s). Now I know each of you would be lying if spending $30 on booze is too much for Friday night, so swing on by or email me an excuse note from your mom!!!!

Lastly please invite friends and colleagues
Thx

BTSH WEEKLY RECAP – WEEK 3
by Eli Kazin

Again, if anyone has anything they want mentioned in these recaps, talk to me at the games, at the bars, or shoot me an email at themajordeegan AT yahoo DOT com.

The Games

STITCHES DO NOT KEEP HAANWA CHAU OFF THE COURT. One day after receiving a nasty gash, and stitches, across the bridge of her nose, Haanwa scored a goal to lead Mexican Standoff to a 5-3 victory against the Dark Rainbows. Ben Bloom had a hat trick, and Jeff “Peaches” Hendricks added a goal for Standoff, who were playing with emergency goalie Paul Valenti between the pipes.

STRIKE FIRST, STRIKE HARD, NO MERCY SIR. Brian Morrison, Derek Tagliarino, Mariko Nakatani, and Jonathan Levine scored goals for Cobra Kai, who jumped out to a four-goal lead just fifteen minutes into the game en route to a 4-2 upset of LBS.

FIVE IS GREATER THAN FOUR. Ted Shumaker scored two goals, including the game winner, and Martin Cejka added a goal to lead the Sky Fighters past the shorthanded Mathematics, 3-2. Andy Pratt scored two goals and Sheena Otto played the entire game as the only female in attendance for the Mathematics.

STYLIN’ AND PROFILIN’. Ellery “The Nature Boy” Gillette scored two goals as the Denim Demons won their contest with the Mighty Squirrels, 6-4. With the victory, the Demons also won a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon, which those who remained at the Johnson’s past sunset were able to enjoy.

CRAIG LACOMBE WANTS YOU TO KNOW THAT YOU HAVE ZERO. Craig Lacombe registered his first shutout of the season, although he was bailed out with a huge save from defender Lindsay Turley, as the Unicorns blanked the Bad Touch, 3-0.

OLD MACDONALD HAD A FARM, E I E I O. Tom MacDonald scored two goals as What The Puck defeated the Tuques, 5-1.

ANT WAS BOTH FILTHY AND GORGEOUS. Tim Hannon scored two goals, including the game winner, as Pork Fried Rice squeaked past Filthy Gorgeous, 3-2. Ant Ventolieri added two assists, and was the center of attention due to his slick new hairstyle, complete with gel.

HOPEFULLY SHE GOT THE BALL AS A MEMENTO. Hiromi Moore’s first goal at any level of hockey was the game winning goal and started a three-goal outburst in the span of one minute early in the second half as Fresh Kills notched a 5-1 win against the Gouging Anklebiters. Kevin Foster also scored a goal for Fresh Kills, and Eric “El Guapo” DiPierri scored the lone goal for the Anklebiters.

THE HOOKERS GOT A SECOND WIND. In a battle of teams with high attendance at Saturday’s tournament, the Corlears Hookers bested the Rehabs, 3-1.

Nickname Nook With Derek Tagliarino
These people will now be known as the following:
Alex Eben Meyer of Bad Touch is now Coop.
Janica Lee of Denim Demons is now Tussin.

Power Play/Offsides
Power Play:
– Ed Lau of Rehabs and anyone who showed up and/or donated money on Saturday. The charity tournament, organized by Ed, raised more than $3,300 for the American Cancer Society, including some donations from league members who did not participate in the tournament. Those who were debating showing up were glad they played, and despite the early starting time all in attendance enjoyed the event…even Haanwa.
– Mexican Standoff’s court side accessories. One bucket of chicken, one boom box in a rectangular box with a boom box graphic on the front, and most important, zero open container citations.

Offsides:
– Typographical errors on the new Gouging Anklebiters uniforms. Apparently, the Gounging Anklebiters are “black for street hockey” …good for them.
– The bird fountain at Corlears actually works. Some kid was operating it prior to the Mathematics/Sky Fighters matchup, causing the pavement behind the goal to become a little slick.

GENERAL UPDATE

RE-PAVING: YES! parks said that they’re going to re-pave corlears in june! RE-PAVE, as opposed to “badly patch!” we’re still pushing for restrooms, storage space, and fixing the fencing.

COMMUNITY BOARD: thanks to peter putka for his ongoing efforts with the parks dept. in getting improvements made to corlears and moffo. the next stage of this effort is contacting the community board. the CB3 sub-committee on parks is meeting on may 10 at 6:30pm, 175 e. 4th st., to discuss an art project at corlears. http://www.canary-project.org/project_eve.html
we are going to take the opportunity to speak to the community board at that time about corlears, our league and what we would like to see happen there. if you’re interested in showing up, let me know.

MOFFO SUMMIT: also, we’re planning a “summit” meeting with all the groups that use moffo, to talk about strategy for getting repairs made to moffo, discuss scheduling and other issues. we’ll keep you posted.

BEHAVE! one key thing that we need to do in regards to moffo (as well as corlears) is to be seen as friendly, cooperative, positive members of the community. it’s vitally important not to cause trouble for the neighbors. please keep that in mind when you’re participating in all BTSH events. that includes cleaning up after yourself and your teammates!

BEER: also, a warning to beer drinkers: be careful about being obvious! a bunch of people got tagged with an “open container” summons at moffo last sunday! if you’re drinking beer, be discreet and aware of the authorities!

NEW REFS: the next orientation is saturday 28 april at parkside lounge. contact ref coordinator schuie for time and details: theatrlights AT earthlink DOT net.

BTSH WEEKLY RECAP – WEEK 2
by Eli Kazin of Cobra Kai

The weekly recaps are only as good as the information that I am provided with, so if you have anything worth mentioning in these recaps, please let me know. Talk to me at the games, at the bars, or shoot me an email at themajordeegan@yahoo.com. Just make sure I am aware of anything noteworthy by 9:00 P.M. on Monday evenings.

Without further ado, the happenings from the opening weekend of the 2007 BTSH season…

The Games
PLAYING SHORTHANDED, PART I.
The Mathematics, with only eight players in attendance, and Laura MacNeil playing with an ankle injury, held on to beat the Mighty Squirrels, 3-0. Andy Pratt scored the game winning goal early in the first half, and the game remained a one goal affair until the Mathematics added two insurance goals late in the second half. The only shutout of the day belonged to Mathematics goalie Joelle Sedlmeyer.

PLAYING SHORTHANDED, PART II.
Pork Fried Rice, with only seven players in attendance, blitzed Cobra Kai, 9-1. Caley Boyd, in her first BTSH game, tallied two goals and two assists, while Brian Barrett contributed three goals and three assists, and captain Ant Ventolieri netted three goals and two assists. Derek Tagliarino scored the lone goal for Cobra Kai, so he has one goal more than the entire Mighty Squirrels team.

I TOUCH YOU ONCE, I TOUCH YOU TWICE.
Alex Eben Meyer’s two goals lifted the Bad Touch to a 3-2 victory against the reformed Skyfighters.

LES HOOKER-TANTS?
The Corlears Hookers scored the only two goals of the second half, making the unveiling of their shiny, Montreal Canadiens style jerseys a success by a 3-2 score. Caroline Morrissey-Bickerton and Charles DeFranco each scored a goal for the Gouging Anklebiters.

DEMONS WERE POWERLESS TO REHABS.
Ed Lau scored three goals, including two in a fifteen-second span midway through the second half, to lead the Rehabs to a 7-1 victory against the Denim Demons. Anthony Romeo made sixteen saves in the winning effort.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHOWTIME.
Ryan Mills, in his first BTSH game, celebrated Showtime’s birthday by scoring two goals to lead the Unicorns past Fresh Kills, 4-1.

I GUESS THEIR MOOD WAS FILTHY.
Suvin Malik and James Pereira scored goals, but it was not enough to take down the Dark Rainbows, who doubled up Filthy Gorgeous, 4-2.

A BANNER AFTERNOON.
What The Puck celebrated their 2006 BTSH championship by scoring just twenty seconds into the game, and coasted to a 9-3 victory against Mexican Standoff.

75 DEGREES STILL TUQUE WEATHER.
The Tuques pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the day, squeezing by LBS, 4-3.

Nickname Corner With Derek Tagliarino
These people will now be known as the following:
Peter Prohaska of Gouging Anklebiters is now Geech.
Eric DiPierri of Gouging Anklebiters is now El Guapo.
Ellery Gillette of Denim Demons is now The Nature Boy (AKA Naitch).

Power Play/Offsides
(This is where Kudos/Gasface used to be)

Power Play:
– Martin Olson of The Bad Touch. He ripped two orange balls from a child’s hands, thus saving the league a clean two dollars.
– Sharif Corinaldi of Mathematics. He wore the shirt that half the league signed at the 2006 end of season party.
– Tim “Scrappy” Gray of Mighty Squirrels. Helmet? Check. Goalie Stick? Check. Pads? He laughs at goalies who use pads.
– The Rehabs/Denim Demons Chug-Off at Welcome to the Johnson’s. The Rehabs fielded two men and two women, while the Demons fielded two men, one woman, and one Adam “Legend Killer” Rubens. The Demons insisted on half-beers, but then proceeded to spill the beer on themselves. Who won is inconsequential, as everyone at the Johnson’s who witnessed the event came away in better spirits.

Offsides:
– Sharif Corinaldi of Mathematics. The aforementioned shirt likely has not seen the inside of a laundry machine in more than six months, if ever.
– Mexican Standoff has legal issues. Three players were issued tickets for violating open container laws while watching the LBS/Tuques of Steel game at Moffo. At least they waited until after their game to get caught. [A BTSH Drinking Legal Defense fund is under consideration. ed.]

Next Week
April 29th, 2007
3pm Corlears 1 LBS vs. Cobra Kai
3pm Corlears 2 Mexican Standoff vs. Dark Rainbows
3pm Moffo Unicorns vs. Bad Touch
4pm Corlears 1 Pork Fried Rice vs. Filthy Gorgeous
4pm Corlears 2 Fresh Kills vs. Gouging Anklebiters
4pm Moffo GAME OF THE WEEK Mighty Squirrels vs. Denim Demons
– The wagering has already started, as a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon hangs in the balance.
5pm Corlears 1 Sky Fighters vs. Mathematics
5pm Corlears 2 Tuques vs. What The Puck
5pm Moffo Rehabs vs. Corlears Hookers

*HOCKEY TOURNEY FOR AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY*

You like hockey. You hate cancer. You like playing hockey to beat cancer.
BE PART OF THIS FUN AND IMPORTANT TOURNEY!

For the 2nd year BTSH’s Ed Lau is organizing a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Last year the event raised over $3000! This is good for everybody, and it gives our league a good name. All the details are at:

http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?team_id=99540&pg=team&fr_id=2460

What: Street hockey tournament with a 3 game guarantee and possible playoff
games.

When: Saturday April 28th, registration (signing a waiver and paying the
entry fee) begins at 8:30am, the games will start at 9:30am sharp (yes, they
did start at 9:40am last year). Expected ending time will be 4pm.

Who: Anyone over 18 who can play a clean, non-contact game of street hockey
for a great cause.

Where: Tanahey Park/Moffo rink in downtown Manhattan near Cherry and
Catherine.

How: There will be 8 teams. All players will be randomly assigned to the 8
teams to ensure that there is an equal distribution of males, females and
talent across the teams. There will be two simultaneous games running, one
in the hockey rink and one on the basketball courts adjacent to the rink.
There will be 2 divisions with 4 teams each and there will be three 40
minute games round-robin style per team. This will be followed by a playoff
game between the top teams from each division. If time permits, there will
be a semi-final playoff round preceding the finals.

There is a $25 entry fee and that goes directly to the American Cancer
Society.
