Championship Game Box Scores

Congratulations Fresh Kills, 2008 BTSH Champions!

That’s The Fucking Way!

CORLEARS HOOK PARK – Staring at a two-goal deficit early in the second half, veteran laden Fresh Kills didn’t blink.  Twenty minutes later, they were celebrating their first championship in team history, courtesy of a 3-2 victory against the Corlears Hookers, who lost in the championship game for the second consecutive season.

“Hollywood” Jeff Lesser, who was a member of Fresh Kills squads that had lost in the championship game in 2002 and 2003, started the comeback by knocking in a loose ball in front of the net following a booming inbound shot from co-captain Kevin “The Planet” Foster.  Seven minutes later, Ariel Imas knotted the game at two with a wrist shot from ten feet out off of a pinpoint pass from Bob “Olmec” Weyersberg.

For the next ten minutes, goaltenders Dave Gil de Rubio of Fresh Kills and Chris Beauvois of the Corlears Hookers put on a show as both denied numerous golden scoring chances.  With just under a minute remaining in regulation, a scramble in front of the Corlears Hookers net saw three Fresh Kills attackers descend on a loose ball.  Heidi “The Maple Leaf Muscle” Karst and Eugene Rha both took swipes at it, but it was finally put in by Joe Tamburo.  The Hookers pulled Beauvois for an extra attacker in the final seconds, but Gil de Rubio and a staunch Fresh Kills defense turned away their last rush, setting off a wild celebration on the Fresh Kills sideline.

“I can’t single out anyone on this team, but we had three players change their plans just to be here today,” Foster said. “Ariel [Imas] flew back from Florida, Jeff [Goldberg] changed his flight plans for a speaking engagement in Georgia, and Eugene [Rha] pushed back a move.”

Like his Cinderella team, which finished the regular season with a .500 record and entered the playoffs seeded 10th, Foster also completed a storybook rise to the top.  If it weren’t for a phenomenal try out that was part of former captain Lesser’s requirement for joining the team, Foster might have been wearing a color other than periwinkle blue on Sunday.

Gavin “Dutch’s Brother” Kearney opened the scoring for the Corlears Hookers, burying a rebound off a Jock Paul shot midway through the first half.  The Hookers, who were missing the services of Jason Eitel, Josh Sadlier-Brown, and Dustin “Fake Dutch’s Brother” Olson due to Olson’s wedding in Mexico, extended the lead to two goals on Peter “Purple Rain” Putka’s shot on an inbounds play three minutes into the second half.

This was a bad Elves loss. Our goalie sucked and honestly, so did most of our girls. Not really my fault this game.
