Where’s Lateef’s Left Hand?

GAME OF THE WEEK
Poutine Machine (8-2-1-1) at Rehabs (3-6-1-2)
Location: Tompkins West, 1:00 PM
All-Time Series: First Meeting
Game Notes: Two of the league’s top goalies face off in this inter-conference showdown.  Poutine Machine’s Tim Brown has dominated the competition in his first full season.  He leads the league in shutouts with five, and has been the backbone of the league’s top defense.  In addition, his goals against average of 1.17 ranks second in BTSH.  However, this game goes beyond just the stats for Brown, as he began his career with a two-game cup of coffee with the Rehabs last season.  Undoubtedly, he will want to put on a stellar showing against his former squad.  Unfortunately, winning will not come easily, as the Rehabs new goalie, Hilary Meyer, has picked up where Brown (and Anthony Romeo) left off.  Her solid goaltending has been the lone constant for the Rehabs this season, and her goals against average of 1.57 ranks fourth in the league.  After a slow start to the season, her team has finally picked up its offense as well, and has now earned points in six of its last seven games, including wins over the Corlears Hookers and defending champion Happy Little Elves.  With both goaltenders playing at such a high level, a low-scoring game is almost a certainty.
Keys To The Game:
1. Poutine Machine rookie Brodie St. John has led the team’s offense in recent weeks, tallying four goals in Poutine’s last four games.  He is part of a virtually unknown offense that is loaded with hidden talent and a man named Mike Haas.
2. Some of the lesser known players on the Rehabs have also gotten hot lately.  Mike Nagin led the team in their upset win against the Corlears Hookers in Week 12 with a hat trick, and notched another goal in the team’s tie against the Elves last week.
3. With interim Rehabs captain Stacy S. Kehoe scheduled to miss this Sunday’s game, the team has turned to BTSH veteran Mike “Cupcake” Bartlett for leadership.  When told of this, Cupcake simply shrugged his shoulders.
Eli’s Pick: Rehabs.  With 16 goals in the past three games, their offense is finally clicking.
Derek’s Pick: Rehabs.  They (Gina) threatened me with violence when I didn’t pick them last week.
Watchability: 4 Caruanas.  Both goalies should keep this game tight until the end.

Week 13 News and Notes

Jason Finally Got His Star

Third Star: These members of Poutine Machine, Poutine Machine. These three all contributed to Poutine’s solid defensive effort, which resulted in a shutout of MacNeil Division foe Mega Touch.  In addition, we’re always impressed when we see a bar showing like this.
Second Star: Jeff Kamen, Denim Demons. Kamen tallied a hat trick in the Game of the Week against Filthy Gorgeous to push the Denim Demons to a 4-3 victory.  With the win, the Demons maintained possession of first place in the Rubens Division.
First Star: Jason Eitel, Corlears Hookers. With only two goals entering this game, Eitel put in an A-Rod-like stat-padding performance with four goals in the Hookers’ 9-3 win against Gut Rot.  Of course, in fairness, after accumulating his goal stats, Eitel finally listened to his mother’s advice to pass more, resulting in an assist to Albert “Al” Huang.

Can Filthy Make It Seven?

GAME OF THE WEEK
Filthy Gorgeous (7-4) at Denim Demons (7-3-0-1)
Location: Tompkins West, 1:00 PM
All-Time Series: Denim Demons lead 4-2-1
Game Notes: Rubens Division rivals face off for the first time this season with just one point separating them in the standings.  Filthy Gorgeous had a horrendous start to the 2011 season, winning just one of its first five games.  However, sparked by the return of “Gentleman” James Pereira, the team has gone on a tear, reeling off six consecutive victories.  During this streak, the team has scored 25 of its 30 goals on the season, with Pereira and his linemate, Suvin “The Guru” Malik accounting for 17 of them.  Despite being back to back regular season champions, the Denim Demons have very quietly assumed first place in the Rubens Division.  However, it will be tough for them to maintain this standing, as they can look forward to one of the toughest remaining schedules in the league.  All seven games left on their docket are against Weyersberg Conference teams, including four divisional games.  The Demons’ first challenge will be this weekend against a rejuvenated Filthy Gorgeous.
Keys To The Game:
1. After being swept by the Demons in 2010, Filthy Gorgeous will be looking for vengeance and retribution.  To motivate her squad, captain Monica Russo has forced the team to watch the broadcast of the New Orleans Saints’ Super Bowl victory.  She has also promised that, much like Drew Brees, she will lead the team in pre-game barking.
2. 2009’s leader in goals against, Aaron “Coach” Pagdon has been the backbone of the Demons.  He has recorded three shutouts this season, including one in the Demons’ last game.  These shutouts have been even more crucial than in past seasons, as all three came in one-goal games.
3. This will be the first time that Filthy’s “Gentleman” James Pereira and Joe Pereira face off against the Demons’ Mike Pereira since the three won the Best Family award last season.  Family members are already taking sides, as cousins Cletus, Merle, and Billy Ray have always been ardent Filthy Gorgeous supporters, while cousins Winston, Reginald, and Preston have always been Demons boosters.
Eli’s Pick: Filthy Gorgeous.  Make it seven.
Derek’s Pick: Filthy Gorgeous.  The Demons have been doing it with smoke and mirrors so far, and Filthy is too hot to stop right now.
Watchability: 4 DiProsperos.  At worst, the winner of this game will have a share of first place in the Rubens Division.

Week 12 News and Notes

Italians Dress Funny

Third Star: Denis Miciletto, La Famiglia. Miciletto padded his lead in the scoring race with another two goals. His game-winner with 3:30 remaining in regulation time clinched La Famiglia’s first ever victory against What The Puck.
Second Star: Andy Pratt, Mathematics. One day after his birthday, Pratt scored his first two goals of the season in the Mathematics’ win against the Dark Rainbows. In addition, he also celebrated his son’s second birthday on Sunday with a party in Tompkins.
First Star: Mike Nagin, Rehabs. Nagin tallied a hat trick to lead the Rehabs in their upset of the Corlears Hookers. Like Pratt, Nagin also entered this game with no goals on the season.
