A Closer Look At The Woodsworth Division

Woodworth Division

While not known by any one defining characteristic, the Woodsworth Division can best be classified as a traditional group of BTSH teams that pride themselves in their classic styles of play and good sportsmanship.  Teams like What The Puck, Filthy Gorgeous, and the Unicorns harken back to the roots of hockey, emphasizing the team over the individual.  Although the other members of the division have struggled this season, they are also widely recognized for their strong work ethic and the joy for the sport that they bring to every game.

Division Namesake:
Perhaps no one personifies the “old time hockey” menatality of this division better than bilingual What The Puck forward Mike “The X-Factor” Woodsworth.  His style of play is rooted in fundamentals, his tenacity is unmatched, and he has tremendous respect for the game’s history.  In addition, he has always maintained a modest air and is known for his excellent sportsmanship.

A Closer Look At The Schloeder Division

Sky Fighters vs. Rainbows

Widely recognized as the “Fun Division,” the Schloeder Division includes some of the league’s most sociable teams.  Although their hockey skills cannot be dismissed, teams such as the Mighty Squirrels, Gouging Anklebiters, and Mexican Standoff are better known for their off the court prowess and after hours activity.  With Rachel “A-Korn” Greene, Phil “Sandy” Donohue, Amy Lott, Jefferson (Peaches), and Brian “Grandmaster B” Barrett populating the division, it is no wonder that it is “always a good time in the Schloeder Division.”

Division Namesake:
Though her appearances have been few and far between this season, Andrea “Vegetable Lasagna” Schloeder of the Mighty Squirrels remains one of BTSH’s most popular personalities.  Known for her sunny disposition, fondness of beer, and inherent love for the sport of hockey, Schloeder perfectly personifies what this division is all about.

A Closer Look At The Rubens Division

Rubens Division

Most people consider the Rubens (often misspelled “Reubens”) Division to be the toughest of BTSH’s three divisions.  It boasts the 2008 league champion (Fresh Kills) and runner-up (Corlears Hookers), as well as the only team that has yet to lose in regulation (Denim Demons).  Players such as Jason Eitel, Jeff Kamen, Chris “Crush” O’Neil, Meredith “Danberg” Ficarelli, and Rem “Canadian Strongman” Garavito are just a few of the stars who populate the Rubens Division.

Division Namesake:
Few names can polarize the BTSH community into feelings of vitriol and adoration as much as that of Denim Demons captain Adam “Legend Killer” Rubens.  However, whether you love him or hate him (or are just indifferent), you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who can match his dedication and contributions to BTSH.

Halfway Home

With the season at the halfway point, we in the media have written about many storylines in the past 12 weeks.  Here is a closer look at our five favorites:

5. Corlears Hookers Promotional Days
After two seasons of sagging attendance among both fans and his players, Corlears Hookers captain Peter “Purple Rain” Putka knew he had to do something to increase turnout.  Therefore, he devised an aggressive promotional schedule for the 2009 season.  The giveaways kicked off in week 6 with the extremely popular Jason Eitel pog.  In the following weeks, promotional items included a Reilly “Fake Dutch” Olson lunchbox and an Albert “Al” Huang trapper keeper.  While the future promotional schedule hasn’t been fully released, the media have received word of a Jock Paul cowboy hat, a Noelle Safar beach towel, and a Peter “Purple Rain” Putka instructionl video on juggling (seen above).

4. Tuques Hockey
When Tuques public relations director Lisa Harrington read that the media compared her team to celery, she knew it was time for some drastic damage control.  After several instructional seminars on charisma, Tuques Hockey is more than just a simple marketing slogan…it’s a state of mind.  Goaltender Minkus has already created what will be the first of many Tuques Hockey vignettes.  In addition, team superstar The Peter Wilson has promised to be more visible for his team and has issued the following statement:  “Listen up, BTSH!  There’s something I’ve been meaning to get off my chest for a while now.  It’s not ‘Peter Wilson’.  It’s ‘The Peter Wilson’.  Get it right!”
