Week 12 Preview

“Damn It Derek, Enough With The Lime Green Shirts!”

GAME OF THE WEEK
Filthy Gorgeous (7-2-0-1) at Sky Fighters (6-3-0-1)
Location: Tompkins West, 1:00 PM
All-Time Series: Filthy Gorgeous leads 2-1
Game Notes: Two of the league’s highest scoring teams face off in this Weyersberg Conference matchup.  After a mediocre 2-2 start to the season, Filthy Gorgeous has steamrolled the competition, going 5-0-0-1 in its last six games.  The team’s offense has been on fire yet again this year, with the trio of Sunny Mehra (10), “Gentleman” James Pereira (9), and Suvin “The Guru” Malik (7) combining for 26 of Filthy’s 39 goals.  The Sky Fighters offense has also been potent, as the team has found the back of the net 36 times this season.  However, unlike previous years, when the team relied heavily on Czech national Martin “Ocho Cinco” Cejka, the Fighters boast a deeper and more balanced attack.  Six different players on the team have scored at least four goals, but no one has scored more than six.  With only two points separating these teams in the overall standings, both squads will be thinking about potential playoff seeding as we begin the home stretch of the season.
Keys To The Game:
1. Dan “D.O.” Owens has been rock solid in net for Filthy Gorgeous this season.  He has allowed more than two goals just twice.  However, he is yet to record a shutout.
2. Sky Fighters starting goalie James Stein has listed himself as “out” for this game with a bad case of scurvy.  Backup Robert Kucera is expected to start in his place.
3. To counteract the presence of the Sky Fighers’ teenage prodigy Sam Lassner, Filthy Gorgeous captain Monica Russo has enlisted the help of a third Pereira brother: twelve year old John “Scooter” Pereira.
Eli’s Pick: Filthy Gorgeous.  They’ve quietly moved into second place in the Rubens Division.
Derek’s Pick: Filthy Gorgeous.  Scooter’s speed and hard wrist shot should complement the abilities of his linemates Joe “Monster Mash” Essock and Liza Watts nicely.
Watchability: 4 Workys.  With the Sky Fighters sporting their blue jerseys as the home team, will we get to see Filthy’s V-necks yet again?

Poutine Machine (4-5) at La Famiglia (3-7)
Location: Tompkins East, 1:00 PM
All-Time Series: First Meeting
Game Notes: Although Poutine Machine goalie Minkus hasn’t been seen in some time, perhaps this game against his former team will inspire him to come out of the shadows and suit up once again.
Eli’s Pick: La Famiglia
Derek’s Pick: La Famiglia.  Minkus’ presence is doubtful, so Poutine’s goaltending situation is up in the air yet again.
Watchability: 2.5 Workys

Mathematics (3-5-0-2) at Unicorns (4-5)
Location: Tompkins East, 2:00 PM
All-Time Series: Unicorns lead 5-0
Game Notes: The Mathematics have won three of their past four games, and put forth their best effort of the season last Sunday in a 6-2 win against Poutine Machine.  Conversely, the Unicorns have struggled recently, with just one win in their past six games, a stretch where they have scored just 11 goals.
Watchability: 3.5 Workys.  With the exception of Week 1, all of the Unicorns’ games have been decided by one goal.

Cobra Kai (6-4) at Butchers (2-5-0-3)
Location: Tompkins West, 2:00 PM
All-Time Series: First Meeting
Game Notes: Cobra Kai enters the Slaughterhouse with a lot of trepidation this week, as the team has struggled all season while playing on the road.  The Dojo has lost its last three away games, with the team’s only road win coming on opening day against La Famiglia.
Eli’s Pick: Cobra Kai
Derek’s Pick: Cobra Kai.  I contend that with home and away games assigned randomly, the team’s away record may just be a statistical coincidence.
Watchability: 3 Workys

Mega Touch (2-7-1) at Dark Rainbows (5-3-2)
Location: Tompkins East, 3:00 PM
All-Time Series: Dark Rainbows lead 8-0
Game Notes: Both teams in this inter-conference matchup suffered tough losses last weekend.  Mega Touch endured its worst defeat of the season, a 7-0 shellacking at the hands of the Butchers, while the Rainbows nearly completed a comeback against Fresh Kills, but ultimately fell short 4-2.
Eli’s Pick: Dark Rainbows. Now that they’ve finished celebrating their Fairy Tale Cup victory, they can get back to the business of winning games.
Derek’s Pick: Dark Rainbows
Watchability: 2 Workys

Tompkins Square Riots (6-3-1) at LBS, Inc. (3-6-0-1)
Location: Tompkins West, 3:00 PM
All-Time Series: First Meeting
Game Notes: The Tompkins Square Riots are unbeaten in their past four games (3-0-1) and have surged to a four point lead in the MacNeil Division.  Last Sunday, after unveiling their new uniforms, the Riots exploded for a season-high seven goals against the Rehabs.  The Riots look to continue their winning ways against LBS, Inc., which along with the Rehabs, has given up the most goals in the league.
Eli’s Pick: Tompkins Square Riots.  They may have started the season as underdogs, but a win here shouldn’t be considered an upset.
Derek’s Pick: LBS, Inc.  They’ve had a rough season, but they still have the potential to play like an elite team.
Watchability: 3.5 Workys

Happy Little Elves (5-3-0-2) at Rehabs (4-5-0-1)
Location: Tompkins East, 4:30 PM
All-Time Series: Rehabs lead 3-2
Game Notes: These two Hackett Division rivals face off in a rematch of a thrilling Week 1 contest.  In that game, the Rehabs took a 3-2 lead with three minutes remaining on a Tom Houston goal, only to see Garrett “Ax” Carrino of the Elves tie the score just two minutes later.  In overtime, Lateef Nurmohamed’s second goal of the game gave the Rehabs the 4-3 victory.
Eli’s Pick: Happy Little Elves…regardless of whether Rich Glanzer is in goal or not.
Derek’s Pick: Happy Little Elves
Watchability: 4 Workys

Gut Rot (4-5-0-1) at Denim Demons (9-1)
Location: Tompkins West, 4:30 PM
All-Time Series: First Meeting
Game Notes: Gut Rot has won three games in a row, including an overtime thriller last Sunday against the defending champion Sky Fighters.  Disturbed by this trend, Denim Demons captain Adam “Legend Killer” Rubens has called in a secret weapon to bolster his team’s chances for a victory.  Former Demon Micael Holmstrom has returned from Sweden for this weekend only…of course, since we just announced this, it isn’t really a secret anymore.
Eli’s Pick: Denim Demons
Derek’s Pick: Denim Demons.  They were probably favored before Rubens dropped the news about Holmstrom.
Watchability: 3 Workys

HOCKEY NIGHT IN TOMPKINS (National Telecast)

Fresh Kills (7-2-0-1) at Corlears Hookers (6-3)
Location: Tompkins West, 5:30 PM
All-Time Series: Corlears Hookers lead 3-2
Game Notes: Since they are second in the league in points and in control of their division, a less-savvy gambler might think Fresh Kills is the easy pick here. But the (relatively) so-so goal differential means the kids in the urinal cake-blue jerseys might be a little overrated. The 90+ heat is a great equalizer in this league, and the Hookers bring 12 points of their own to the table. Attendance could be a big factor for the Hookers, but assuming they have enough bodies, they’ll get it done.
Vegas Line: Fresh Kills by 2
Jesse the Greek says: Hookers and take the points.
Watchability: 4 bottles of Just For Men

What The Puck (7-2) at Gouging Anklebiters (4-6)
Location: Tompkins East, 5:30 PM
All-Time Series: What The Puck leads 7-4
Game Notes: BTSH titles may be won in October, but now is the time of year when the true grinders get the tough wins. Sure enough, every Sunday, What The Puck is out there running around in the heat like they were real athletes or something. Maybe they’re taking to heart the weekly pap from Commissioner Adriano Bratta about drinking enough water or flossing your teeth, but whatever it is…it’s working. Third place in their own division (arguably the league’s toughest) but with the 4th best record overall, these guys come to play every week [Ed: except last week]. The Anklebiters? Well, they’ve won 4 games, which might provide some consolation as they’re getting their pants chewed off this Sunday by the Orange.
Vegas Line: WTP by 2.5
Jesse the Greek says: Give the points. This one is all WTP
Watchability: 2 Brontosaurus Burgers
