Week 9 Preview

Unicorns Aim To Devour Filthy Gorgeous

Sus

GAME OF THE WEEK
Filthy Gorgeous (5-1-1) vs. Unicorns (5-2)
Location: Tompkins West, 3:00 PM
All-Time Series: Filthy Gorgeous leads 2-1-1
Game Notes: After winning their first five games of the season, Filthy Gorgeous has gone winless in the last two weeks, losing to the Dark Rainbows and then tying the Denim Demons.  Their potent offense, which averaged six goals a game during their five-game winning streak, has been held to just two goals in the last two games.  However, the defense remains staunch, as Filthy has allowed only 10 goals all season, including a shutout against the Demons last week.  The Unicorns have won their last three games, although each has been by only one goal.  Despite this impressive run, their loss against the Happy Little Elves remains a puzzling dark cloud to their season.  Although they clearly have the potential to play at an elite level, they also have the potential to lay an egg every now and then.  Which version will show up on Sunday when they face their Woodsworth Division rivals Filthy Gorgeous?
Keys To The Game:
1. While “Gentleman” James Pereira leads Filthy Gorgeous with nine goals and has received most of the fanfare for his accomplishment, Sunny Mehra has quietly chipped in seven of his own.  He remains an underrated force on the team.
2. Although Susanna of the Unicorns has only two goals this season, she has come through in the clutch multiple times.  She scored the only shootout goal in their win against the Mathematics and tallied the overtime goal to beat the Corlears Hookers.
3. Though the game’s existence is questionable, Filthy Gorgeous defeated the Unicorns 4-2 in a tight week 5 battle.  Although Filthy wore their electric lime throwback jerseys for that game, captain Monica Russo has ruled against breaking them out a second time.
Eli’s Pick: Filthy Gorgeous.  A win will give them some momentum for their showdown with the Corlears Hookers next week.
Derek’s Pick: Filthy Gorgeous.  Although they didn’t get the result they wanted last weekend, their level of hockey was playoff caliber.

Sky Fighters (4-3) vs. Gouging Anklebiters (2-4-1)
Location: Tompkins East, 2:00 PM
All-Time Series: Sky Fighters lead 6-4
Game Notes: The Gouging Anklebiters gave What The Puck its biggest scare of the season last Sunday, as the Biters held a two goal lead with ten minutes to go in the game.  Despite eventually losing in heartbreaking fashion, they now have the confidence that they can run with any team in the league, including their Schloeder Division foe, the Sky Fighters.
Eli’s Pick: Sky Fighters
Derek’s Pick: No Pick. Derek will be reffing this game.

What The Puck (7-0) vs. Cobra Kai (1-5-0-1)
Location: Tompkins West, 2:00 PM
All-Time Series: What The Puck leads 3-0
Game Notes: Although his exact state of mind was hazy at the time, What The Puck’s Adriano “Muscles Marinara” Bratta claimed he will sport a Cobra Kai t-shirt this Sunday.  Whether this will be to rejoin his old team or to stick it to his former teammates remains to be seen.
Eli’s Pick: What The Puck.  Bratta’s only wearing the Cobra Kai shirt, because he doesn’t have an official What The Puck shirt yet.
Derek’s Pick: What The Puck.  Bratta remains with WTP, as it’s very difficult to get out of one of Captain Larry’s ironclad contracts.

Fresh Kills (3-4) vs. Dark Rainbows (6-1)
Location: Tompkins East, 3:00 PM
All-Time Series: Dark Rainbows lead 6-1
Game Notes: Dark Rainbows players Sean Reynolds and Jennie Brown are set to be wed this coming weekend.  As a result, the Dark Rainbows expect three players to be in attendance for this game.  In an effort to equalize the competition, Reynolds invited several members of Fresh Kills as well.  Bob “Olmec” Weyersberg was not one of them.
Eli’s Pick: No Pick. Eli will be reffing this game.
Derek’s Pick: Fresh Kills.  The numbers become too much of a factor.

Denim Demons (4-0-2-1) vs. Mathematics (2-3-1-1)
Location: Tompkins East, 4:00 PM
All-Time Series: Tied 2-2
Game Notes: The Denim Demons have not allowed a goal in their last 113 minutes of play.  However, their offense has also stagnated somewhat, as they have only notched three goals in their last three games.

Corlears Hookers (4-2-0-1) vs. Mega Touch (1-5-1)
Location: Tompkins West, 4:00 PM
All-Time Series: Corlears Hookers lead 2-0
Game Notes: Mega Touch finally got of the schneid last week with a sound victory over the favored Happy Little Elves.  Conversely, the Corlears Hookers suffered a disappointing loss in their championship game rematch with Fresh Kills.
Eli’s Pick: Corlears Hookers
Derek’s Pick: Corlears Hookers

Rehabs (6-1) vs. Happy Little Elves (3-4)
Location: Tompkins East, 5:30 PM
All-Time Series: Rehabs lead 1-0
Game Notes: With the Rehabs now on a five-game winning streak, this had the potential to be a blockbuster Game of the Week.  Had the Happy Little Elves managed to win last weekend, they would have entered this game with a four-game winning streak and a winning record. Sadly, the Elves cracked under the pressure and once again fell below .500.  However, there is one interesting backstory to this game, as Rehabs captain Meredith “Danberg” Ficarelli seems to have an unfortunately close relationship with several of the Elves, most notably annoying, yet faithful reader Rich Glanzer.
Eli’s Pick: Rehabs.  This feels a lot better.
Derek’s Pick: Rehabs.  The biggest battle of the game may be between Glanzer and Hector “$howT!m3” Melendez to see whose trash talk is less comprehensible.

Tuques (1-6) vs. Mighty Squirrels (2-5)
Location: Tompkins West, 5:30 PM
All-Time Series: Tuques lead 7-1
Game Notes: The Tuques are riding high after their upset of the Sky Fighters and recent uptick of press coverage.  In addition, with team goalie Minkus now playing at an “average” level, the Mighty Squirrels will have to work (kind of) hard to score goals.
Eli’s Pick: Tuques.  They seem to have the Squirrels’ number.
Derek’s Pick: Mighty Squirrels

HOCKEY NIGHT IN TOMPKINS
Mexican Standoff (0-6-0-1) vs. LBS, Inc. (4-3)
Location: Tompkins East, 6:30 PM
All-Time Series: LBS, Inc. leads 7-0
Game Notes: Schloeder Division rivals will square off in this week’s edition of Hockey Night in Tompkins.  When these two teams met in week 6, LBS, Inc. blitzed Mexican Standoff 8-0, as league-leading scorer Karsten Pichon recorded a hat trick.  With LBS, Inc. still holding a grudge over the “beach incident”, they will continue to show no mercy.
Eli’s Pick: LBS, Inc.  They’re not too pleased with Standoff’s white jerseys either.
Derek’s Pick: LBS, Inc.

Media Records:
Eli: 39-13
Derek: 34-19

I know The Media is on Mathematics but you can’t say anything about your team? Nothing at all? Try harder, dammit.

6/7/09 4:00 PM East Denim Demons vs Mathematics

the mathematics are hoping that sarah has her baby by sunday, so that someone with natural born hockey skill can be added to the roster to salvage derek & eli’s line. they’ll be known as the “two men and a baby line”… that is, unless sarah has a girl.
