Third Star

Tim B from Butchers

Despite the outcome of the game Tim B was fantastic in net on Sunday.  There were many ‘Oooohhss’ and ‘Aaahhhhss’ and a couple of ‘Wows’ uttered by the spectators at the saves he made.

2019: Play in Round Weekend – Scoring Highlights

Tuesday, October 8th, 2019

On to the box scores…

Riots 1 @ Fresh Kills 5

Riots – David F (1)

Goalie Loss – Dave GdR (0-1)

Fresh Kills – Tom R x3 (3), Nate (1), Nicole H (1)

Goalie Win – Barch Pile (1-0)

Game Notes: Riots are now looking ahead to a Schlitz cup run that will top last year’s 3rd place finish in the lower conference playoff pool.

Advanced Analytics: After forgetting how to inbound the ball legally in his Week 12 makeup game, Tom remembered how to score goals as well (it’s amazing what making 5 games will do for a guy) and scored early and often in this one.

Last year Gabe was out of town and WTP really should have beat FK in the Round of 16.
One year later, and this is the only hope for the Hookers…?

Rut Rot 0 @ Mega Touch 5

Goalie Loss – Peter Parker via FA

Mega – Alex EM (1), Nate L (1), Julie x2 (2), Nadya (1)

Goalie Shutout Win – Mike T (1-0, 1 Shutout)

Game Notes: Tuckman notches the first shutout of the BTSH playoffs, helping Mega avenge the recent OT loss against their Michaliga Katz divisional foe.

Trust in the waffleboard.

Dank Bows 2 @ Butchers 1 F/OT

Rainbows – Dan C x2 (2)

Goalie OT Win – Greenwald (1-0)

Butchers – Pete d’A (1)

Goalie OT Loss – Tim Brk (0-1)

Game Notes: Like their division mates, Math, the real losers in the play-in round are the division 2 teams who lost that are ineligible to keep playing some “meaningful” Schlitz cup street hockey for the rest of the month. Enjoy golf season.

Without Yetter again next week…who could possibly step up (at centre/center?) and fill the void for Rainbows. No one is coming to mind…

Math 0 @ Sky Fighters 3

Goalie Loss – David L (0-1)

Sky Fighers – Dana L (1), Moez (1), Brett (1)

Goalie Shutout Win – OG James (1-0, 1 Shutout)

Game Notes: Sky Fighters brass are hopeful that a playoff entry into the Round of 16 means some of their new talent have bought into the team’s future. On the other hand, maybe Tadpole Jack is now also poachable?

Forget golf…more free time for…whatever this is.

Karma 6 @ Gremlins 8 (Scrimmage)

Game Notes: I was told Walker did not show up. #PlayingTimeConcerns

He’ll steal plenty of FA scrimmage time, however.

On to the real playoffs…!

Around the League – 2019 Opening Round of the PBR Cup Playoffs

Sunday, October 6th, 2019

The Riots scored against Fresh Kills! However, Fresh Kills scored more. Fresh Kills will face the Hookers next Sunday in the Sweet Sixteen. Line is at Hookers -0.5.

Gut Rot played an amazing first half against Mega Touch, but Jeff and Tuckman lead Mega to victory. Mega Touch has a face-off next Sunday with the Rehabs. Line is at Rehabs -4.5.

Emily and the Sky Fighters won the Stamina Bowl against a depleted Math team. (Taplole’s chances at the ROY just fell off a cliff.) Sky Fighters will face a thirsty Biters squad next Sunday. Line is at Biters -3.5.

The Butchers and Dark Rainbows played the most thrilling game of the day with the Dark Rainbows winning in OT. Dripping Dark Rainbows and Jess have a date next Sunday with the Powerhouse LBS and Scotty K. Line is at LBS -6.5.

Thank you to everyone that came out for an entertaining scrimmage!

Special thinks to Alex from Mega, BSA from Poutine, and Bryan and Mike T from Dark Rainbows for helping to clean up and put the equipment away.

See you next week at the Sweet Sixteen!

By Jess

15. Butchers v 18. Dark Rainbows

In this corner: The Butchers

The road so far: Not the Butchers we’re used to, but despite a few setbacks they’ve won key games against tough opponents.

The history books: Last year the Butchers lost this exact play in game to the Rainbows in what was a crazy upset.

Injury report: Pete still might be out from when he messed up his elbow a few weeks back. Meredith is out for the count with a mid season ACL tear.

One player to watch: Brady. He cut his hair so people wouldn’t recognize him but it didn’t work. Whether you think he’s underrated or overrated he’s still dangerous with the ball, folks.

Key number: 4- the exact number of women they’ll have playing due to injuries. 2 is better than none in terms of breaks and subs

Dominant narrative: It’s been a bumpy road but if they succeed in this game they should be able to give their next opponent a tough time.

The big question: Will history repeat itself?

Bandwagon-ability: Fairly high. How could you not cheer for the lovable faces of Dana, Rachel and Creamy.

One good reason to root for them: Creamy said if they win him and Diana won’t move to Delaware WOOOO

2019 Playoff Preview (Part 4)

Thursday, October 3rd, 2019

The final installment of the media’s preview of the 2019 PBR Cup playoffs.

5) What The Puck

Richie Hero: Ooooooh I forgot about WTP when I deemed Isaac captain of the year. Great season from them, I do expect them to beat the Gremmies. Not sure if I’d pick them to win another round. I still think they are far away from the olden days of championship contenders from WTP, but on any given Sunday, they can beat anyone.

JW: They were the only team who swept us in the season series this year, and they moved up a division. Their high finish this year is not only because of the level of competition in the 3rd and 4th divisions, as they have the talent to beat any 1st division team. IF they beat us, I could see them winning in the next round, also. But, again…”no prediction from me as I’ll be reffing this game”. (Hi, Hicks.)

Meatbox: When Hogg isn’t telling me to shut up for trying to plan semi elaborate goal celebrations on the bench, he’s sending me useful Pavel Barber instagram videos. If that’s not captain of the year material (he was already snubbed Rookie of the Year, so I’m sure he’ll be snubbed this too), then I don’t know what is.

As a team, they really bolstered their depth with the additions of Henry, Mike McC, Annie, and Ed in net this year. They also have a jacked guy on their team who multiple people have insisted can out bench me. That is 100% fake news. No one out benches the box.

WTP showed us they were for real when they put together the longest win streak of the year and I think they’ll make it to the Elite 8 where if the bracket goes chalk, the Rehabs will be waiting. Less than ideal, but I feel like that will be a much closer game than people expect. In years past, teams may have slept on these guys, but I’m pretty sure nobody is going to after what they’ve put together this year.

Arya: What The Puck has been on the upswing for a couple years now but they really hit their stride this year. McCauley, Henry and Ed have been big acquisitions on the manliness front but don’t underestimate the impact of adding two field hockey legends the past two seasons in Sam and Annie to give their lady contingent some scoring punch.  This is a tough, gritty team who I could see losing in the 1st round to a talented Gremlins squad, but who I could also see pulling an upset and reaching the final four which would be an amazing achievement considering they haven’t won a playoff game since I’ve been in the league. It’s been a breakthrough season and while I think they’ll probably get knocked out in the quarterfinals, don’t be surprised if they’re knocking on the door of D1 in a couple years.
